Founded by entrepreneur Tebogo Ditsebe, this family-run winery has transformed a once-overlooked vineyard into a beacon of quality and innovation in the South African wine industry.

From Consultancy to Cultivation

Tebogo Ditsebe’s entrepreneurial journey began in the consultancy sector in Kimberley. However, her aspirations took a transformative turn when she acquired a 48-hectare farm in Jacobsdal through the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform’s Proactive Land Acquisition Strategy (PLAS) in 2013. Recognizing the land’s potential, Ditsebe embarked on a mission to rejuvenate the vineyard, laying the foundation for what would become Botebo Wines.

Establishing a Legacy

The name “Botebo,” meaning “depth” in Sesotho, encapsulates the winery’s commitment to producing wines with profound character and quality. Since its inception in 2015, Botebo Wines has curated a diverse portfolio, including varietals such as rosé, sparkling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chenin Blanc. Each bottle reflects the rich terroir of the Free State and the meticulous care invested in its creation.

Embracing Sustainability

Sustainability lies at the core of Botebo Wines’ operations. The winery employs drip irrigation systems sourced from the Van der Kloof Dam, ensuring efficient water usage and minimal environmental impact. This commitment to eco-friendly practices not only preserves the local ecosystem but also enhances the quality of the grapes, resulting in wines that are both flavorful and responsibly produced.

Community Engagement and Empowerment

Beyond winemaking, Botebo Wines is dedicated to uplifting the local community. The winery provides employment opportunities, with three permanent staff members and up to 50 seasonal workers during peak periods. Additionally, Botebo invests in employee training and skills development, fostering economic growth and empowerment within the region.

Recognition and Growth

Botebo Wines’ excellence has not gone unnoticed. In 2018, the winery received R450,000 worth of equipment through the Free State Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs’ Agro-Processing Funding Programme. Further support came from the national Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development, which provided R3 million to expand the vineyard by five hectares for raisin production.
